Night Of Champions - May 1st 2010

On May 1st, two athletes from Team Ultimate competed in Cask's "Night of Champions' Card in Burlington, Ontario.

Shabir Brar made his Muay Thai debut with amazing focus and confidence. Considering the fact that he comes from a boxing background and only began learning Muay Thai last summer, he did exceptionally well against his opponent who has represented Canada in Muay thai competitions in Austria.

Round 1: Shabir took a bit of time adjusting to competing in Muay Thai as this is brand new to him. With that being said, his opponent did win round 1.

Round 2: was a different story. Shabir came out with a strategy composed by Kru Paul and coach Rob Bromley and we found him comfortably fighting in his Muay Thai style and appeared to have the tied up the scoring with this round.

Round 3: was the final. The round was back and forth but Shabir was in a groove and got the better of it by effectively using the strategies he received between rounds. The judges however, did not see the win in our favour and awarded the opponent the victory by a very close decision with Shabir losing by 1 point.

Troy Sheridan was up next for the Eastern Candian Championship Title. Troy's opponent was a highly experienced fighter of many disciplines and has over 50 bouts.

Round 1: was a "feel out" round for Troy. In this round he identified his range and set the pace for the bout. The opponent was very active but Troy managed to remain composed and still land shots including the first leg kick of many to come.

Round 2: Troy's opponent rushed in, but again, by utilizing the techniques and strategy prepared for this fight by Kru Paul, Troy dominated with his hands and worked that leg kick which dropped his opponent numerous times. When the round was ever, the referee stopped the fight for safety reasons as Troy's opponent could not continue with all that damage done to his leg. Having a strong, focused mentality, Troy "The Golden Boy" Sheridan had stopped his opponent in the 2nd round leaving him with a brand new Championship Belt.

Congratulations goes out to both of our guys for putting on a stellar performance and to our 3 coaches, Kru Paul Minhas, Coach Derek Salvatin, and Coach Rob Bromley! Remember, these guys are now your teamates so if you do see them in the club, make sure to intorduce yourself and say hi. We had lots of support at the event from the rest of the team just by being in attendance. Hopefully YOU can also be there for the next event.

Thank You to all who attended and made our Official UMA West Grand Opening a success! We had many people show up to see the club, and Muay Thai matches.

Mayor Susan Fennell and Counselor John Sanderson, as well as Dr.Ruby Dhala’s office cut the ribbon and welcomed us to the Brampton community! Together we rose over $800 donated to the Centre for Addiction Counseling at the William Osler Health Centre.

First up was Matt Speciale, Matt fought an incredibly fast paced and exciting fight. Eventually losing a split decision to the eventual tournament winner. Although Matt wasn’t awarded the victory, he walked away learning much for his triumphant return to the ring!

Next was Troy Sheridan, Troy was up against the last years 2009 CASK National Champion. After quickly reading and feeling out his opponent, Troy began landing effective kicks and straight knees against a power puncher. In the end, Troy earned the Win and the 2010 CASK National Championship Title.

Alex Vidinovski was first up on Sunday (Day 2).  Alex immediately proved dominant by standing his ground and cautiously advancing on his opponent. Landing his knees, kicks, and powerful straight punches. Alex used his coaches’ advice from in between rounds, passing the opponents head in the clinch and landing a straight right knee to finish the fight. Great work Alex on your 2nd round TKO and CASK National Title!

Scheduled next was Josh Champagnie, Josh was unable to compete due to weight and experience complications with 2 other athletes in his weight bracket. Josh kept his positive attitude and looked only to the benefit of all his training preparing for this bout. Stay tuned to see Josh in the near future!

And in the final bout for UMA, Joseph Valtellini made his return to the ring against a veteran in Josh Fitzsimmons. Josh came to this bout in shape, strong and with a well thought game plan. Joe took a hard knee to start the fight, and showed us the benefits of his countless hours of conditioning. Joe took control of the bout and forced two standing 8 counts on his opponent and earning a Unanimous Decision for the 2010 CASK National Title. Congratulations and welcome back Joe!!!

Thank you to all who helped with preparing these athletes, as well as the overwhelming amount of support that came out to the Tournament!

Bring It On!

On Saturday, October 10th, 3 Athletes from Ultimate Martial Arts stepped in to the ring at Oktoberfest in Kitchener. All their hard work and preparation were clear while watching these 3 compete.

First up was Alex Vidinovski, the first thing everyone noticed was that Alex’s opponent had a distinct height advantage. He worked his way inside landing heavy punches, effective leg kicks, and staying active the entire bout. Showing his skill and incredible work ethic. Alex’s match was deemed a draw due to the fact that it was a Muay Thai exhibition. Regardless, Alex was able to prove to himself and everybody else he deserves to be in the ring competing with high-quality opponents.

Next was Matt Speciale, the first competitor training primarily out of UMA West! Matt made history that day by defeating a game adversary who fought hard throughout the entire 3 round bout. Both these athletes put on a great show, staying very active the entire match in a back and forth battle. Matt took over in the later 2 rounds giving him the majority decision! More importantly, his technique was clean throughout the bout even in the exhausting 3rd round flurries between the two. Congratulations to Matt and all his teammates!

In the Co-Main event, Troy Sheridan took on top Canadian Amateur competitor Josh “Razorhands” Fitzsimmons. Having a record of 9-2, Josh was a major test for Troy in only his 4th bout. Both athletes looked in great shape ready for a war. The first round began with both athletes taking some time to size each other up. Troy stayed calm while landing slightly less, but more effective strikes. At 1 and a half minutes of the first round, Troy exploded, countering Josh’s kick with a hand combination trained specifically for this match, putting him down on the mat and scoring Troy the 1st Round Knockout! Proving to be fight of the night! Congrats to Troy for his excellent performance.

_________________________________________________________________                                                                                                                                      UMA Represented at 2009 IKF World Classic!
July 24-26th was the annual IKF world Amateur Muay Thai
Championships in Orlando Florida. Team Ultimate was
represented by Joesph Valtellini, Troy Sheridan and Eleea
Ouroumidis. Accompanying them was Strength and Conditioning
coach Costa Kladianos.
Weigh in's took place on Friday and all athletes successfully made
their weight. The first bouts were on Saturday morning. Joseph
and Troy had received a first round bye in their divisions due to
being seeded #1 and #2 respectively in their divisions.

Eleea was first up in the 150 pound division and did not
disappoint delivering a vicious knockout with an overhand
right with only 6 seconds left in the final round! Next Up in the
160 pound division was Joseph Valtellini in his first match since
claiming the Ontario Amateur title. Joseph was just too
powerful for his opponent and knocked him down twice in the
second round before the opposing corner threw in the towel.
The next UMA fighter was Troy Sheridan also in the 150 pound
division. Troy put on a clinch and Knee clinic to claim the
unanimous decision. The final match for Day 1 was Eleea's 2nd
round matchup. Once again Eleea and his hands of stone
proved too much for his opponent as the match was stopped in
the second round. Unfortunately Eleea injured his foot and was
unable to continue on to day 2.

Day 2 began with Joseph putting on a knee clinic and out
classing his opponent once again to move on to the finals of the
160 pound division. There was no rest as Joseph had to fight in
the finals 30 minutes later. Once again in this match and despite
having fought three rounds just half hour previous, Joe's knees
and conditioning were just too much for his opponent. He easily
pulled out the unanimous decision and claimed the 160pound
IKF amateur championship!
Troy moved into the finals, he faced an opponent with over 20
fights but managed to keep him on the ropes and on the defensive
actually knocking his opponent down twice in the fight. Troy
pulled off the unanimous decision and looked like a seasoned pro
against an experienced and tough opponent. Troy wins the 150
pound IKF amateur Championship!

The Team came out with 2 titles, a 7-0 record and impressed
officials and other teams thanks to all the training with Kru
Paul Minhas over the years. But impressed other not only with
their skill in the ring but their class and sportsmanship outside
the ring .
Great job Guys!

Interview with Lyoto Machida
By: Jatinder Dhoot

In a  world dominated by Muay Thai and boxing, who would have thought that traditional
Shotokan Karate adapated to MMA would allow a fighter to work his way to a UFC title shot?
Lyoto Machida and his family, which includes his father who is a Shotokan master from Japan, have adapated the martial art to form Machida Martial Arts Karate. His unorthodox approach to the MMA game has made Machida one very difficult fighter for opponents to get a handle on. That on top of a
great talent, intense determination and a samurai spirit have propelled the affable
Machida to the top of the UFC light heavyweight class. He takes on Rashad Evans
on May 23rd for the UFC light heavyweight title at UFC 98.

What is your training schedule like?
I train 5 hours a day, 6 times a week
What are your thoughts on fighting for the title?
This is what every fighter dreams of and he's very happy to be able to fulfil his dream.
What are your thoughts on Rashad Evans?
I think Rashad is a great fighter, an outstanding wrestler, a pretty good boxer and he definitely deserves
to be where he's at. I just think it's going to be two complete fighters fighting each other with perfect records, it's going to be a great fight.
How has Karate influenced your MMA game?
Karate is my main game and has given me all the aspects of the fight game, my speed and everything. I think it is what sets me apart from everybody else and is what brought me to where I'm at. Not only does my stance complicate a lot of things for my opponents, but my stance also puts me in different positions and in
different ways of standing, and this complicates people very much because I'm not inside that pattern of
boxing and Muay Thai, I go beyond that.
Do you train Muay Thai and boxing?
I train only my Machida Karate, I'll spar with a boxer or a Muay Thai guy but I don't train specifically boxing or Muay Thai. I'll throw some knees and throw some moves out there but when I train with a Muay Thai guy it's to learn how to adapt his game.
Do you visualize your fights before you compete?
Me and my brothers and father will visualize the whole fight before the fight and everything that can happen
in every situation so that I'm prepared.
When did you know you wanted to be a fighter?
I was born into a very traditional martial arts family so I was inevitably going to be involved in it somehow. But it wasn't until I was about 15 years old when I saw the first UFC that I put in my mind that I had this dream to become a professional fighter and not just be involved in the fight business. When I was 15 I started seriously to become an MMA fighter.
Does being an undefeated fighter (14-0) add pressure?
Of course the pressure is always there, I'm an undefeated fighter, and there's a lot of pressure around that.
But I try to think to myself this is my moment and I worked hard to get here, and I can't make it about my
record and about pleasing everybody, I just have got to go out there and enjoy my moment and do my best.
Do you feel you have a samurai mentality because you were raised in that tradition?
My father brought me and my brothers up with the samurai mentality and the philosophy.
It's hard to keep it up on a daily basis, but that's a big part of me-the samurai philosophy.
You have mentioned in the past that living the life like a samurai warrior involves being honest, disciplined
and real, and it is a difficult task to live on a day to day basis. What are some of the difficulties involved?
One of the hardest things is overcoming yourself, your insecurities and the things in your mind.
If all I had to deal with was myself then that would be a big problem. Fighting Rashad or any other guy
I just have to do what I do, but the hardest part is keeping a philosophy day by day with myself.
How have you and your family adapted Karate to MMA?
What we try to do is adapt the real martial art of Karate to MMA, which is not what you see in Karate
competitions, this is a discipline where you can throw your knees and elbows. And I sort of try and adapt that martial art into MA.
Do you get nervous before fights? What is your mindset right before you compte?
Everybody gets nervous before fights, that's inevitable, I just try to calm down and visualize the fight just so I'm confident about what I'm doing out there, and as I'm walking in I try to clear my mind of everything,
I try to think of nothing. I just let my body act, the body can take control and do what it's trained to do.
Are people surprised you have been so successful in MMA using Karate?
People are mostly surprised because they don't understand that he's a Karate guy, they see me throwing the
elbows and knees and they say, "That's not Karate, how is that Karate?" People just really don't know what the
real martial art Karate is, they think of it as a sport as what we see in Karate competitions and what we train as
little kids here in America. But in reality what I've adapted with my family is something is completely different.
What aspect of your game do you want to work on the most right now?
The main thing that I have to focus on is my attacks, I'm pretty good at counter-striking, but I've been working
on just going up and attacking his opponent.
What are a three words you would use to describe yourself?
Persistence, determination and disposition (difficult word to translate from Portuguese, something along the lines
of having a lot gas and willing to try hard).
Nothing came easy in my life and I needed those three things to succeed.

Team Ultimate also had another excellent representative in Tony Bossio. Tony (Red corner) had his
debut Muay Thai match against a more experienced competitor. He was unfortunately not given the
split decision based on his opponents aggression but proved to everyone why he deserves to be in the ring. He showed excellent technique, defense, and mental strength.

____________________________________________________________________________
On Saturday July 20th, 2008 Team Ultimate journeyed to Stoney Creek Ontario to compete at
Iron Tiger’s Muay Thai Competition aptly titled ‘Return of the Warriors.’ It was the return of Team Ultimate to the Thai fight scene.
On this muggy and rainy Sunday afternoon the scheduled outdoor fights were moved indoors to the location’s banquet hall, and the first thing that hit you as walked in was the amount of supporters in
the blue corner. It felt like we were on home turf and it was like another day at UMA. Many
supporters were sporting their UMA t-shirts and some even made posters. The vibe of our side was unbelievably positive and you could tell from the curious looks of the other spectators and other
gyms that they had no clue what UMA was going to bring to this fight card.

____________________________________________________________________________________

Troy Sheridan (in the Blue Corner) started the match with a distinct height advantage over his
opponent from Ronin Mixed Martial Arts Ottawa (in the Red Corner). It was that same height
advantage that he used to keep his opponent at bay. Using his longer reach, his jab kept his
opponent moving back and at times unable to block both the jabs and low kicks/knees/push &
swing kicks that followed right after. His opponent, although he had his share of hits wasn’t
prepared for Troy’s continuous stream of combinations and you could see the frustration that
began to build up that it was getting to him. Eventually his opponent looked like he was just
throwing out anything to just break through Troy’s guard and steady stream of blows, less
accuracy and more wild last breath strategies just to stay standing. Troy’s consistency and never
back down attitude shone through and the blue corner was declared the winner in the first match
 of the day.
____________________________________________________________________________________

The second fight of the day was spear headed by our own Chris Pjontek (in the Blue corner) and
another fighter from Ronin. Both fighters were evenly matched height wise and the both men were
testing the other out with jab crosses and swing kicks and at one point Chris caught his opponent’s
leg mid swing kick and shoved him back. Ronin’s fighter was consistent with the high kicks and
going hit for hit but Chris but he didn’t make it easy for him. Ronin’s fighter may have started off
with a slight advantage, but once again that energy level dipped and that’s when Chris turned the
fight around in his favour, and pushed through his tiredness and displayed that pivotal energy
factor that can make or break a fight. The Blue corner took home another win.
____________________________________________________________________________________

The third fight from our club was fought by Neil Carta (in the Blue Corner) and his opponent
(in the Red Corner) was another fighter from Ronin. The competitors were evenly matched and the
fight moved extremely fast. Ronin’s fighter kept Neil moving; there were no pauses from his
opponent, just a constant stream of attacks and Neil did his best to defend and counter.
By the end of the first round the pace had slowed down and it gave Neil a chance to put his
technique to use, but was not enough to steal the round. During the second round Neil was caught
with some power shots by Ronnin’s game competitor that caused him to bleed. Neil’s blood work
was not provided and this caused the fight to go to the judges. With only one round being finished
the decision was given to the red corner. It is already showing this experience has made Neil’s
training and determination even more rigorous.
____________________________________________________________________________________

Talk about making an entrance...falling instead of landing gracefully is not how most people
picture starting their first fight as they try to enter the ring, but that is how our Nishanthan started
his. Maybe its testament to his training but he got right back up and smiled for his family
and friends. Evenly matched in terms of height Nishanthan never conveyed the slightest break of confidence in his ability to dominate this fight. Right off the bat Nishanthan started with a swing
kick and went straight into a clinch, his opponent was overwhelmed as he twisted and turned him about. Using his jab cross to get him in followed by either some form of a kick or a knee, he then
swept his opponent right off his feet. It was like watching a lion stalk its prey constantly taunting
and forcing him back, trying hard to think how to counter attack, his opponent got in some
moves but Nishanthan never seemed phased by anything and eventually knock his opponent
off his feet. In the end the red corner was no match for what UMA’s own had to offer,
Nishanthan was declared the winner.
____________________________________________________________________________________

The first and only one of our contenders to fight out of the red corner, Brooke Smith fresh off her
first fight was ready to bring home the gold and cap off the night in UMA’s favour.
Brooke went straight to work and didn’t give her opponent from Krudar too many chances to get
close or rest. Krudar’s fighter was using her whole body weight to throw some heavy
combinations and eventually started to gas but our Brooke executed many beautiful high kicks in retaliation and some nicely aimed punches. Krudar’s fighter would start off strong but her
technique was no match for Brooke who stayed consistent in her pace and eventually threw a
flying punch (to the crowd’s delight).  It was followed by a spinning swing kick and elbow.
A truly brilliant fight from our female fighter and with a unanimous decision, she was
declared the winner.
It was what we had all been waiting for and now that is over all I can say is what a fantastic
fight day. In terms of sheer excitement, eagerness and tone these fights were everything that we
had hoped for and envisioned. Team Ultimate gave us a day to remember and put on a wonderful
display of Muay Thai. UMA fans were the true winners that day and it is the dawn of new
day for UMA’s next batch of fighters. The sky’s the limit and Team Ultimate has only just begun.
